Alum Testimony on the Eve of Retirement

August 2, 2024

Is it worth studying at ATS? I can say without any doubt that it is! I am Chaplain Lt Col Gabriel Rios (USAF), retiring on July 13th after 24 years of service. I am thankful for the vision of ATS leadership when they decided to open a campus in Orlando, Florida. I was part of the first graduate class in May 2003 and the first Hispanic to do so. After serving the FL National Guard as a Chaplain Candidate from February 2000 until February 2003, I entered active-duty service in March of that year.

What role did ATS play in this? The Master of Divinity prepared me very well to serve the men and women and their families who are serving our nation. I was honored to serve the Air Force and minister to American warriors of all branches. Whether I was in Croatia, Ecuador, or Afghanistan, the spiritual needs of my flock were demanding. This is when the pastoral education acquired at ATS played an important role. Anyone can have a compassionate heart to help others, but it is better to have the ministerial tools to minister at a higher level. I am thankful that I am an ATS alumni.

During my service, I faced many challenges of all types. There were moments when I thought it was my last moment on earth and that I was going to meet the Lord. However, my unwavering faith in our Almighty God not only kept me calm and in peace but also empowered me to serve with a sense of purpose and courage. I knew that He was the one who called me, and hence, He would take care of me and my family. Indeed, He did! I am grateful to serve a personal God who deeply cares for all our needs. He was present with me during my career and allowed me to share His love and good news with thousands of people, including of other faith groups. For the glory of God, I can tell that I had Jews, Muslims, and Sikhs attending my worship service. As they told me, “We come because you don’t mistreat us and always preach of the love of God.” Glory to God!

As I complete the last lap of this chapter of my life, I trust that the Lord will show me the next season of my life. I am praying for it. I am retiring from military service but not from service to Jesus. May God continue blessing our great nation and our wonderful people!

LTC Rios, what an awesome testimony! It is amazing how God puts us in positions and roles to demonstrate His love for those who are so different from us. And yes, ATS also prepared me so well for the similar mission He’s given to me. Congratulations on your retirement, and keep serving in love.

Ch Rios, you were my Pastor in Puerto Rico, and a colleague in ministry in the Air Force and your service to GOD & others has been exemplary for two reasons: faithfulness and humility. Thank GOD the day you answered the call to follow Him!
