January 28, 2024—On behalf of the Presidential Search Committee, we are pleased to provide an update on the ongoing work of the Presidential Search Committee. Late last week, the committee conducted in-depth in-person interviews with a strong group of semifinalist candidates. This was an important step, as it allowed us to engage in meaningful dialogue and explore key aspects of the presidential position, profile and description.
Working in collaboration with our search firm, we developed strategic questions to assess candidates across several critical areas, including:
- Vision and leadership
- Understanding and practice of governance
- Academics and innovation in education
- Enrollment management, fundraising, and external relationships
- Personal faith and spiritual formation practices
- Commitment to Asbury Seminary’s doctrinal statements, ethos, and values
- Fiscal management
- Team building
- Cultural competency
As part of the process, each candidate also completed the Townsend Personality and Relationship assessment, which provided additional insights for the committee to review ahead of the interviews. Candidates were also given the opportunity to ask questions of the committee, allowing for a mutual exchange of perspectives and expectations.
Following these interviews, the committee conducted a rigorous and candid analysis of all candidates. This process enabled us to prioritize and identify the top candidates to advance further in the search. As we move forward, we have outlined next steps, including:
- Engaging in more extensive conversations with the top candidates to address emerging questions.
- Conducting comprehensive reference checks for these candidates.
These efforts are being carried out with great care and intentionality, and we remain committed to completing this process in a timely manner.
